Ecco Biom Tour Golf Shoes: A Costco Find That Actually Delivers
I wasn't planning on buying golf shoes at Costco. But there they were - Ecco Biom Tours, sitting on an endcap, at a price that made me do a double take. I'd heard good things about Ecco's golf shoes for a while, so I grabbed a pair. Several rounds later, I'm really glad I did.
First Impressions
The leather is the first thing you notice. It's soft right out of the box - no stiff break-in period where you're limping through the first couple rounds. Ecco makes their own leather (they actually own the tanneries), and you can tell. These feel like quality shoes that happen to be for golf, not golf shoes trying to look nice.
On the Course
The spikes make a real difference. The Biom Tour has 8 removable spikes and some extra traction grooves on the outsole. Coming from some mediocre spikeless shoes I'd been wearing, this was night and day. You feel locked in through your whole swing - no slipping, no second-guessing your footing, even on wet morning grass.
What surprised me most was the comfort. The midsole has a nice bounce to it, and the insole (which is removable and washable - nice touch) adds good cushioning on top of that. I walked 18 on a hilly course my first time out and my feet felt great at the end. That almost never happens with new shoes.
The waterproofing works too. I've played through heavy dew and some light rain without any moisture getting through. Feet stayed dry without that sweaty, suffocating feel some waterproof shoes have.
The Costco Thing
Worth mentioning: Costco isn't an authorized Ecco dealer, so the manufacturer's warranty might not apply. But honestly, Costco's return policy is arguably better anyway. If something goes wrong, they'll take them back.
The price is the real story here. These are legitimately premium golf shoes at a Costco price. I don't want to say exactly what I paid because it seems to vary, but it's well below what you'd pay at a golf shop.
Any Issues?
Ecco uses European sizing, which threw me off at first. My usual size ended up being fine, but I'd try them on if you can. I've also heard some people say to go up a half size.
The only other thing is that the spikes use the Pivix system, which is a little less common than some other spike types. Not a big deal - replacements are easy to find online - but worth knowing.
The Verdict
Great leather, solid traction, comfortable all day, waterproof. At the Costco price, it's kind of a no-brainer if they have your size.
Pros
- Excellent leather quality - comfortable from day one
- Great traction with the spiked outsole
- Waterproof and breathable
- Washable removable insole
- Costco pricing on a premium shoe
Cons
- European sizing can be confusing
- Pivix spikes are slightly less common for replacements
- Not an authorized dealer purchase (no Ecco warranty)
Rating: 4.7/5 - One of the better gear finds I've made at Costco, and that's saying something.
